GRAPHICS AND ANIMATION FOR DOCUMENTARIES
Picl's director Lauren Orme creates animation and graphics for documentaries, from broadcast to branded to feature films.
Credits include GFX for Strictly Amy: Cancer and Me on BBC One (directed by Jacci Parry for Wildflame), animation for short docs on BBC3 and Channel 4 News, and branded animated documentaries for Audible and The Economist.
Lauren has supported feature documentary teams during development, with visual R&D and animation testing, and created animation for documentary shorts. In her personal work, Lauren has directed anidocs including her award-winning graduation film You Got Beautiful (2012).
Lauren is an alumna of Grierson Doc Lab (2013), where she trained with mentors from leading UK production companies, developed her skills in creative documentary storytelling and met collaborators she still works with today.
Lauren is just wonderful to work with. I've worked with her on projects for the BBC, University of the Arts London and the National Theatre and on every project she brings huge amounts of creativity, professionalism and is always an oasis of calm, even under the most pressured circumstances! I always relish an opportunity to work with Lauren and her team.

GFX for Strictly Amy: Cancer and Me (Wildflame)
We created graphics for this BBC One documentary about Amy Dowden’s breast cancer journey, collaborating closely with director Jacci Parry to design and deliver authentic GFX that supported the emotional arc of the film. The film was shortlisted for Best Authored Documentary at the 2025 National Television Awards.
Branded documentaries for Audible (Whalebone Films)
We created animation for two branded documentaries for Audible with Whalebone Films – one exploring the power of storytelling and another delving into the cultural obsession with true crime. Our animation helped visualise abstract ideas, give the films a stylistic edge, and connect emotionally with viewers.
Animation for Channel 4 News: Why Do They Jude Me?
We created animation for this short documentary produced by Nuwave Pictures for Channel 4 News and ITN. Directed by Patrice Etienne, the film explores what rebellion means for a new generation of Londoners. Our animation added visual energy and depth to this portrait of modern youth.
Animation for The Economist (Whalebone Films)
We produced animation for a branded documentary for The Economist, made with Whalebone Films, exploring gender bias. Our motion graphics and titles helped visualise key data and enhance the film's visual identity.

Animation for short doc Love Life (Nuwave Films)
We produced animation for Love Life, a short documentary directed by Patrice Etienne, telling the extraordinary true story of Freddie Knoller – a survivor of Auschwitz and Bergen Belsen. We we used chalk-on-blackboard animation to evoke memory and fragility.
Animation for No More Page 3 (Whalebone Films)
We animated sequences for No More Page 3, an educational documentary directed by Chloe White exploring the history and debate around The Sun’s “Page 3” feature. Our animation supported the film with engaging, thought-provoking visuals, that helped the film navigate restrictions by visualising newspapers and headlines creatively.
You Got Beautiful (2012)
A short animated documentary exploring women’s relationship with their bodies – a film about eating yourself. Directed by Picl's Lauren Orme, this was Lauren's graduation film from the University of Wales, Newport in 2012.
